Line Protection Modules for the
Stinger DSL Access Concentrator

The line protection modules (LPMs) for the Stinger DSL access concentrator act as a safeguard between subscriber loops and the Stinger line interface modules (LIMs). Each LPM provides signal coupling and electrical isolation for the corresponding LIM. They interface with the LIMs through the Stinger midplane and provide connection to the copper-pair lines through one or two external 50-pin connectors on each LPM. With up to 14 LPMs installable per chassis, the line protection modules help give Stinger the robust performance expected of a true carrier-class product.

Includes protective circuitry to
keep line interface modules
functioning smoothly

Even the most sophisticated communications network is subject to undesirable influences, such as surges and fluctuations in voltage. These forces can be disastrous to inadequately protected carrier premises equipment, causing downtime, lost revenue and unhappy customers. That is why every Stinger line interface module requires an associated line protection module to electrically isolate the incoming DSL lines and provide vital surge protection. With no voltage transients to interfere with the high-performance LIMs, data keeps flowing and customers stay satisfied.

Works with interface redundancy module (IRM)
for fast switchover and robust performance

Optional n:1 redundancy is available with two of the LPM modules, when they are used in conjunction with an interface redundancy module (IRM) located in another of the 14 LPM slots. If LIM failure occurs, the Stinger control module sends a signal to the IRM, instructing it to open a path from the mid-plane to the designated spare LIM. It then sends a signal to the LPM associated with the failed LIM, causing the ingress data path to be redirected to the mid-plane. Because the LPMs have no decision making circuitry and react strictly as instructed by the control module, no time is wasted on contention. As a result, switchover to the designated spare LIM occurs as quickly as possible.

Available in four models
for greater flexibility

Line protection modules come in 24- and 48-port models, with and without circuitry for redundant operation. The 24-port model has a single 50-pin RJ-21X connector. The 48-port version features dual RJ-21X connectors. The two versions supporting LIM redundancy have relay banks that the control module activates to select an alternate LIM, should a failure occur.
