The Challenge
Organizations worldwide are increasingly using IP-based technologies to support critical applications on both Internet and Private WAN links. VPN technologies, in particular, are making it possible to gain competitive advantage by connecting employees, partners, and customers using the Internet. Although the benefits of Internet technologies are undeniable, the resulting flood of traffic can cause severe congestion on limited WAN/Internet links. Too often, bandwidth hungry discretionary traffic overwhelms business critical traffic on these links.

The Solution
Check Point solves the network congestion problem with FloodGate-1, a policy based, enterprise bandwidth management solution for private WAN and Internet links. It optimizes network performance by assigning priority to business critical traffic based on relative merit. For example, ERP, database, or e-commerce applications running on a corporate VPN, can be prioritized over less important Internet traffic. By aligning network resources with business goals, FloodGate-1 makes it possible to realize the true potential of IP networks.

FloodGate-1® precisely controls the flow of inbound and outbound traffic at WAN and Internet access points, based on a Quality of Service (QoS) policy. A policy consists of traffic rules that assign bandwidth privileges to specific classes of traffic. Each rule defines traffic classification criteria and corresponding QoS controls.

End-to-End QoS Controls
Integrated Differentiated Services (DiffServ) support enables service providers to offer end-to-end QoS for VPN and unencrypted traffic on IP WANs. By prioritizing traffic according to the DiffServ standard, FloodGate-1 enables corporate QoS requirements to be extended to the WAN. DiffServ classes can be easily assigned in addition to local link rules, as part of a single QoS policy.
